1985 年，Marvin Minsky 出版了一本开创性的著作《The Society of Mind》。这部著作提出了 “智能不是任何单独的机制的产物”这一观点——Intelligence is not the product of any singular mechanism but comes from the managed interaction of a diverse variety of resourceful agents。 Marvin Minsky 认为，人类实际上就是某种机器，人类的大脑是由许多半自主但不智能的 “代理（agent）” 所构成的。他有一句话广为流传：“大脑无非是肉做的机器而已（the brain happens to be a meat machine）。”
